Covid-19 & NSB2020 Season

We wish to thank you for your continued interest in the Nigeria Spelling Bee and we hope you and our tenacious spellers are in good health.

As we are already aware, the novel Covid-19 Pandemic occasioned a global lock-down and disruption of academic activities all over the world which also led to the cancellation of both small and large events, including the American Scripps National Spelling Bee (May 2020) and announced cancellation of the African Spelling Bee (November 2020).

The Bee Spelling Competition Initiative (organizers of the Nigeria Spelling Bee) has hitherto placed a hold on all Spelling Bee activities in line with global best practices as we monitored the progression of the lock-down.

Based on the above, the Board of Trustees of the Nigeria Spelling Bee, sitting on the 29th of September, reviewed the situation, deliberated and agreed as follows:

1. The 2019/2020 Season of the Nigeria Spelling Bee is hereby cancelled, and the below applies.

2. All spellers who contested and emerged as the successful representatives (Regional Qualifiers) of their respective states will be recognized as Honourary Co-Champions of the 2020 Season.

a. All coaches of such spellers will also be recognized as Honourary Co-Champion Coaches.

b. Certificates of recognition as Honourary Co-Champion & Co-Champion Coach will be presented to such spellers and coaches at the venue of the 2021 Season of Nigeria Spelling Bee.

c. A mini pre-competition ceremony and official presentation will be conducted at each respective state.

d. All Co-Champions who are still within the age and class eligibility can be registered for the 2021 Season at no cost. (A text will be sent to coaches in this regard.)

3. Registered spellers in states where the State level Qualifier was yet to be conducted should note the following:

a. Payments for the competition remain valid and spellers will be able to roll-over their registrations to the 2021 Season as long as they meet the eligibility criteria.

b. A speller who has passed the eligibility criteria can be replaced with another speller within the eligibility criteria from the same school or family.

c. There will be need for a fresh registration on the portal using the same payment details.

With this notice, registration for the 2021 Season is now open on www.NigeriaSpellingBee.com/Register. Dates and venue for the 2021 Season will be announced on the calendar on www.NigeriaSpellingBee.com/calendar

For clarity sake, co-champions in the 2020 Season who are eligible will compete afresh in the new season from the State Level.

Thank you once again for your continued support. We regret any inconveniences this might cause. We welcome your feedback on feedback@nigeriaspellingbee.com

Yours faithfully,
Abdulsalam Ibrahim,
National Coordinator.

Greetings from us here in Lagos and Goodvine Schools, Shangisha-Magodo, to be precise.
My question is connected to item 2d above. How does the co-champion register AT NO COST for the current season? Does he pay alongside the others, and then later get a refund? I ask this because I’ve tried doing the registration but I can’t find any provision made for co-champions who are supposed to register AT NO COST. Please treat as urgent. Thanks.
    Kind regards,
    From Goodvine Schools.
