The stage was set, and the spotlight shone brightly on the remarkable spellers who demonstrated their linguistic finesse at the captivating 2023 Nigeria Spelling Bee Grand Finale. This prestigious event witnessed the emergence of six exceptional spellers, each deserving of their title and recognition. The competition took place from the 2nd to the 6th of August 2023, hosted by the distinguished Deeper Life High School Port Harcourt Campus, Rivers State.
In the Junior category, it was Ajibola F. Yinyinola A of Saint Lawrence Metropolitan College, Ekiti State, who stood tall as the Junior Champion. Displaying remarkable linguistic dexterity, Ajibola’s triumph was marked by a scholarship worth ₦500,000 and a series of prestigious honours, including the opportunity to represent Nigeria at the forthcoming African Spelling Bee in Addis Ababa.
Similarly, in the Senior category, the spotlight was on Esther I. John of Deeper Life High School Uyo Campus, Akwa Ibom State. Esther’s commanding spelling skills secured her the coveted title of Senior Champion, accompanied by a substantial scholarship worth ₦1,000,000, alongside an invitation to represent Nigeria at the highly anticipated African Spelling Bee.
Adding to the aura of achievement, Adegalu T. Stephanie of Deeper Life High School Owerri Campus clinched the 1st Runner-Up position, while the 2nd Runner-Up title was claimed by Daniel C. Nzeh of St Augustine College Kaduna, Kaduna State, both showcasing their remarkable dedication and linguistic prowess in the Junior category. They have won for themselves scholarships worth ₦300,000 and ₦200,000 respectively.
Winning ₦500,000 and ₦300,000 scholarships respectively in the Senior category, the accolades continued with Minabowa P. Esere of Deeper Life High School Port Harcourt Campus, Rivers State securing the 1st Runner-Up spot. Charles David of Greater Tomorrow Int’l College, Ondo State, showcased impressive spelling skills to secure the 2nd Runner-Up position.
Among the array of talents displayed, the art of essay writing also found its shining stars. Okocha C. Kendra of Top Quest International School, Delta State emerged as the Junior Essay Winner, while Obot J. Imoh of Calvary Arrows College Gboko, Benue State, claimed the Senior Essay Winner title.
These champions are not only recipients of prestigious scholarships and awards but also have the remarkable privilege of representing Nigeria on the continental stage. As part of their triumph, they have secured an exclusive opportunity to participate in the 2023 African Spelling Bee in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from the 5th to the 9th of December, amplifying their accomplishments beyond national borders. This privilege is similarly extended to all National Finalists. These champions will showcase their skills, determination, and unwavering spirit as they represent Nigeria on the continental stage.
