You can participate in the Nigeria Spelling Bee by registering online on www.NigeriaSpellingBee.com/register as long as you meet the criteria. Click Here for the criteria.

The competition is open to all students in Nigeria within the criteria, both Spellers registering under their schools or registered independently by parents.

The Nigeria Spelling Bee does not provide a list of English words that will be used in the competition, as we expect spellers to vastly read and not just cram-up words.

However, there is a Practice Word list of more than 700 words available in the Study guide.

Spellers are expected to read broadly and use the study guide as a guide on how words are usually formed based on their origins.

The competition is organised by the Bee Spelling Competition Initiative, an NGO duly registered with the CAC and endorsed by the National Senior Secondary Education Commission and the  Federal Ministry of Education to carry out the Nigeria Spelling Bee for both Primary and Secondary School students in Nigeria and send Spellers to represent Nigeria at international literary competitions such as the African Spelling Bee. The organisation is also in a working relationship with the Ministry of Information and Culture.

The Nigeria Spelling Bee is open to sponsorship from corporate organizations and individuals who want to make a difference in the lives of the next generation of Nigerians. Visit our SPONSORSHIP page for more details.

Registration for the competition is ₦3,000 only per student. Registration fee is to be paid at any branch of FirstBank Nig., Account number 2022981198 (Bee Spelling Competition Initiative). Payment can also be made via Mobile/Web/ATM Transfer.

After payment, visit the registration portal to fill in the details of the speller. A confirmation slip will be presented after registration. Spellers are expected to submit their confirmation slips during accreditation on the competition day.

There is no limit to the number of spellers a school can register. Every student who meets the eligibility criteria is welcome to participate in the Nigeria Spelling Bee.

Schools are encouraged to give all interested students the opportunity to compete.

Yes, schools registering more than 10 spellers can enjoy a discount. For every 10 spellers paid for, the school can register one additional speller for free.

For example, ABC School would only pay ₦30,000 for 11 spellers (instead of ₦33,000) or ₦60,000 for 22 spellers (instead of ₦66,000). Simply make a bulk payment for all spellers, and use the same payment reference for all registration forms.

The official dictionary for this season of the competition is the “Shorter Oxford English Dictionary (SOED, Sixth Edition)” by WordWeb Pro. This dictionary serves as the exclusive source for words and adjudication criteria used in the competition.

The “Shorter Oxford English Dictionary” (SOED), used by Nigeria Spelling Bee officials, contains over 600,000 words and is developed by WordWeb. In comparison, the Oxford Advanced Learners Dictionary (OALD, 9th edition) has about 185,000 words.

Due to its size, the SOED is not available as a single physical book. However, you can access it through online software for both computers and Android phones.

  • To download the SOED version used by the Nigeria Spelling Bee to your computer, visit WordWeb.info. It costs $68 and includes word pronunciations.
  • For Android users, you can download a similar app developed by MobiSystems from the Play Store. A free trial is available, after which it costs around ₦11,000.

The Nigeria Spelling Bee is divided into two categories: Senior and Junior. These categories are based on age, not the student’s school level (Primary or Secondary).

See the RULES Page for full eligibility critaria.

Yes, you can enroll a young speller in the senior category. However, once registered in the senior category, the speller cannot switch to the junior category later in the competition.

The competition CALENDAR will display the dates, venues, and times for each state across Nigeria.

If your state is not yet listed under ‘Upcoming’ or ‘Concluded,’ don’t worry! You’ll receive an SMS notification once the details are confirmed. In the meantime, we recommend registering, downloading the study guide, and preparing your students ahead of time.

Schools interested in hosting the Nigeria Spelling Bee are welcome to submit their request. Hosting the competition offers unique benefits for schools.

For more information on how to become a host and the benefits involved, please visit our HOSTING page to make your request official.

Each speller will be expected to appear on the competition day and spell words assigned as per rounds of the contest.

At the end of the round, spellers who spelt correctly will progress to the next round, this is done until the needed number of Qualifiers emerge in the state level, or until a Champion emerges in the National Finals.

For full details, see the RULES page.

Yes. We welcome schools or individuals who wish to come to observe and support the Spellers on the competition day.
